The Rural City of Wangaratta recognises the importance of Work Experience and Student Placement opportunities for both students and Council.

Our valuable, customised and well-organised opportunities partner our qualified and experienced staff with students enabling them to:

  • Observe and develop practical workplace skills,
  • Explore possible career options,
  • Develop an understanding of employer expectations,
  • Increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence.

To Council, Work Experience and Student Placements contribute to the development of the local community and assist with training the future workforce. Councils are a major employer within communities. Across Victoria, councils employ more than 43,500 staff in more than 300 different job roles.

Applying for Work Experience: Secondary School Students

Work experience is available to secondary school students, aged 16 and over, in Years 10 to 12. 

RCoW works in partnership with NE Tracks LLEN (North East Tracks Local Learning and Employment Network) and schools in our region to match the right student to the right Work Experience opportunity. 

A placement is generally 4 – 5 days in duration however a student can undertake multiple placements up to a maximum of 40 days per year.  The placement can be further broken down for example as 1 day per week, 2 days per week, a week block or as best suits the student, school and RCoW area.

Students will receive $5.00/day.

If you are a secondary school student who would like to participate or enquire about the RCoW Work Experience program, please express your interest a minimum of 3 weeks before the expected commencement date of the Work Experience.  Do this by using the Work Experience Application Form below.

Your application will be forwarded to the People & Culture Team and you will be advised by phone or email of the outcome.

Applying for a Student Placement: Tertiary School Students

Student Placement is offered to students enrolled in tertiary education, such as TAFE and University, who require a student placement to satisfactorily complete their course.

In accordance with the tertiary institutions guidelines, students may be invited to work on a project or on general tasks required for the department where they are placed.  The timing of the placement is as required by the tertiary institution and suitable to the RCoW area.

There is no employment relationship so Student Placements are unpaid.

If you are a tertiary student who would like to participate or enquire about the RCoW Student Placement program, please express your interest a minimum of 3 weeks before the expected commencement date by using the Student Placement Application Form below.

* Work experience and Student Placement requires close supervision. Consequently, opportunities are at the discretion of RCoW as they are balanced with the organisation's operational needs.
