The Rural City of Wangaratta will be alive with cricket this October following the announcement by the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events confirming that five teams will be converging on the city in a T20 World Cup Preparation Tournament.

The tournament, driven by the Rural City of Wangaratta Council, will see the Namibian, Scottish and Lahore International cricket teams combine with the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades academy teams to compete in three days of strong competition at the Barr Reserve Sporting Precinct.

The Rural City of Wangaratta is proud to present this free event for our local and regional community to attend. Spectators will have the chance to watch a game and see two of the teams playing in the world cup later in October.

Mayor Dean Rees said “This is an exciting opportunity for the people of Wangaratta, and I encourage community members to come along and witness this show-stopping competition. There will be food and drink available on site and some fast-paced action guaranteed.”

Games, scheduled as follows, will take place during the first week of October and are being held at Barr 1 and Barr 2 ovals at the Barr Reserve Sporting Precinct.

“Events such as this are a direct result of Council investment in attracting events to our town for the enhancement of the community, and the economic and tourism benefits for businesses and retail alike. Events are a key priority for Council, and we are pleased to see the community engaging with a wide range of opportunities on offer,” said Mayor Rees.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Victorian Government, the Wangaratta District Cricket Association, the City Colts Cricket Club and Sports Marketing Australia.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said the Victorian Government was proud to support the event through its Significant Sporting Events Program.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for locals to enjoy world class cricket right in their own backyard, providing a perfect warm up for the World Cup starting a week later,” he said.
