The Rural City of Wangaratta in partnership with Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation and Traditional Owners is pleased to support Wonga dang-a-latj, a reflective ceremony taking place on Australia Day. Council acknowledges that this day has different meanings for many, and this ceremony will provide the opportunity to have a yarn, be with others and share history and culture.

Mayor Dean Rees said “This is an important step in our continued journey of reconciliation and walking together with traditional owners in our community. This is the first time that a ceremony of this nature has taken place in Wangaratta, and Council is extremely pleased to support Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation in their delivery”.

The ceremony will start at 7am in Merriwa Park and will feature traditional Bangerang Dancers, a smoking ceremony, welcome to country from Traditional Owner Uncle Dozer Atkinson and the sharing of culture and stories, concluding by 8.30am. Attendees are then encouraged to attend the Australia Day awards ceremony in King George V Gardens to acknowledge citizens of the year, young citizen of the year and event or project of the year award winners commencing at 9am.

“True reconciliation comes from really acknowledging the past and committing to walk together into the future. We are pleased to work with Council and Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation, sharing our knowledge and continuing to overcome challenges for the benefit of the wider community” said Traditional Owner, Uncle Dozer Atkinson.

This is one of three free events on offer for the community on Australia Day, January 26. All events are inclusive, and we encourage everyone to come together and participate however they feel most comfortable.
