Rural City of Wangaratta Mayoral Election Result
This evening the Rural City of Wangaratta held an Unscheduled Council Meeting where the newly elected Councillors took their Oath, or Affirmation of Office, officially stepping into their roles as representatives of the Rural City of Wangaratta. As part of the proceedings, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were also elected.
Councillor Irene Grant has been elected as Mayor for the term of 1 year and Councillor Harvey Benton has been elected to serve as Deputy Mayor.
The position of Mayor was contested, with Councillor Fuller also being nominated. The position of Deputy Mayor was uncontested.

It’s all about delivering vital services—like our library, performing arts, aquatic centre, and sporting grounds—and maintaining our roads, bridges, and community spaces. I’m looking forward to working together to achieve great outcomes for our community." said Councillor Grant, Mayor
“It’s going to be an interesting, busy time. As the new council settles in, there are lots of things to get done, both strategic and housekeeping.” said Councillor Benton, Deputy Mayor
Councillor Irene Grant was first elected to Council in 2002 and was re-elected to the Warby Ward in 2024. She served as Mayor for three terms from 2002 – 2004 and as Administrator from 2013 – 2016.
Councillor Harvey Benton was elected to Council in 2016 and was re-elected to the Ovens Ward in 2024. He served as a Councillor from 1981 - 1994 for the former Shire of Wangaratta. Cr. Benton served as the Deputy Mayor from 2023-2024.
