The Rural City of Wangaratta along with North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) and Wangaratta Landcare & Sustainability are delighted to present the Platypus & Rakali Discovery event at the Mullinmur Wetland on Friday 3 May.

The event is a chance to learn more about Australia’s fascinating water mammals: the renowned Platypus and the lesser-known Rakali (Australian Water Rat). This is set to be an enriching event featuring insightful presentations by local specialists, engaging interactive exhibits, enjoyable family activities, and a BBQ.

While the Platypus captures our imagination with its extraordinary features, the Rakali remains a hidden gem. With webbed feet and water-repellent fur, the Rakali bears a resemblance to a diminutive otter, complete with its distinctive, white-tipped tail. Explore their world and contribute to understanding their local habitat through a discussion on citizen science data.

The Rural City of Wangaratta Environment Team encourage locals to record their sightings of Platypus and Rakali and share the data via their email so that local information can be explored at the event. Email your sighting information including species, location, date, and time to environment@wangaratta.vic.gov.au. Why not head out for a walk or ride along our beautiful local waterways and get involved in some citizen science. Remember to keep your four-legged friends on a lead to protect our local wildlife.
