The Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre, in partnership with the Grit & Resilience Program, is bringing a unique and exhilarating experience to our community with the launch of No Lights No Lycra (NLNL). This program, set to begin on Friday, 12 July, promises a free-form dance party held in complete darkness every Friday night until 30 August.

NLNL is not your typical dance class. Originating in Melbourne, this global phenomenon invites participants to dance without the pressures of perfect choreography or the need to dress to impress. Instead, it offers a safe, judgment-free space where individuals can enjoy the pure joy of movement and music. This program is designed for everyone, from teenagers to seniors, creating a diverse community united by the love of dance. A 2019 study, "Lights out, let’s dance!", found that 88% of NLNL participants broke their inactive lifestyles, with 97% reporting improved mental health and 95% experiencing better physical health.

We turn off the lights and crank up the tunes to release our inhibitions, move our moods, and work up a wild sweat. is the official NLNL description. Bek Nash-Webster, Program Coordinator of the Grit & Resilience Program, shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming events. “We are delighted to partner with Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre to bring No Lights No Lycra to our community. This program offers a wonderful opportunity for people to come together, let loose, and enjoy the sheer joy of dancing. We hope to see many from within Wangaratta join us and experience this unique event.” She said.

The Grit & Resilience Program is funding NLNL as part of its SIAG Blueprint initiative, which supports various community connection efforts and embraces inclusivity. This partnership highlights a commitment to fostering a supportive and vibrant community environment.

Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre, known for its state-of-the-art facilities and wide range of fitness classes, sees this program as a perfect addition to its offerings. The Centre continues to promote health and wellbeing through innovative and inclusive programs.

The NLNL sessions are free and open to everyone aged 13 and above (those aged 13-16 must be accompanied by an adult). To book a spot, interested participants can call the
