The Rural City of Wangaratta is excited to release render images of the much-anticipated large-scale sculpture by Victorian based artist, Alexander Knox. The artwork titled Bubbles in the landscape was commissioned by Council as part of the King Valley Prosecco Road Public Art Project and aims to create a distinctive sense of arrival to the King Valley region.

Alexander Knox has delivered several high-profile public art commissions both nationally and internationally. His bold, contemporary sculpture will be positioned at the entrance to Oxley township on the intersection of the Snow Road and Wangaratta-Whitfield Road and is expected to be completed and installed by the end of June 2024.

Bubbles in the landscape will serve as a striking landmark as visitors exit the highway and venture towards the King Valley, transitioning from urban areas to a destination known for artisanal produce, family vineyards, and a relaxed lifestyle. The sculpture's vertical design will highlight the expansive rural views, making a notable visual impact on the countryside. As the King Valley grows in popularity and attracts more visitors, the artwork will become an iconic symbol that reflects the region's identity.

The King Valley Prosecco Road Public Art Project has been enabled by $4M in funding from the Victorian Government, as part of the King Valley Prosecco Road Revitalisation Project.

Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees has been a supporter of the project from its inception “As we unveil Bubbles in the landscape, we celebrate more than just a striking sculpture. This iconic landmark signifies our community's vision and dedication to enhancing our townships, fostering tourism, and showcasing the unique charm of the King Valley. It's not just art; it represents our evolving identity as the region continues to grow and attract more visitors." He said.

Background

In August 2023, 44 tendered submissions were received from international and Australian artists and designers. The tender process followed Council’s Public Art Policy and involved community engagement via the Public Art Acquisitions Panel, which shortlisted the submissions to three finalists.

The three finalists were invited to develop concept designs and respond to the brief. Following a thorough selection process guided by Council procurement practices and best practices in public art delivery, a preferred design was chosen, and contracts were established to begin the project.

In November 2023 Council announced that it had awarded the Prosecco Road Public Art commission to highly regarded Victorian based artist and sculptor, Alexander Knox.

The Public Art Acquisitions Panel recognised Knox's attention to the environment, location, and local context. They praised Knox's thorough research on the region's industry and community, as well as his resolved design delivery. This successful outcome is expected to attract visitors and tourists to the site, serving as a welcoming statement for the food and wine region.
