Fire Prevention Inspections Begin Ahead of Fire Season
This month, Rural City of Wangaratta Officers will commence Fire Prevention Inspections on private properties throughout the municipality to ensure preparedness for the upcoming fire season. Council emphasises that reducing vegetation around homes is a shared community responsibility and encourages residents to take proactive measures to reduce fire risks.
In addition to conducting routine inspections, Council Officers will respond to community complaints regarding fire hazards on private land. If a property is identified as posing a risk, the landowner will receive a Municipal Fire Prevention Notice outlining the necessary actions to reduce the hazard.
The Fire Prevention Notice will include straightforward instructions for risk mitigation, such as slashing blocks, creating firebreaks, clearing undergrowth, and removing flammable materials. Landowners are required to comply by the specified deadline to help protect their property and community. Failure to comply may result in substantial penalties, in the form of an infringement fine.
Protecting life and property remains Council’s highest priority and its responsibilities in fire risk management extend to both private and Council land. Fire Prevention is a shared responsibility, with Council’s Municipal Fire Prevention function being just one step in ensuring we all stay safe this fire season.
