The Rural City of Wangaratta is excited to announce the release of the Draft Recreation and Open Space Strategy (2024-2033), a comprehensive plan aimed at enhancing the community's access to recreational facilities and open spaces. As part of our commitment to promoting an active and connected lifestyle, we invite the public to provide valuable feedback on this important initiative.

Recreation plays a pivotal role in the lives of our residents, whether its organised sport, walking a pet, or swimming in Wangaratta’s beautiful rivers. The Draft Recreation and Open Space Strategy (2024-2033) is a forward-looking document that outlines our vision for the next decade, focusing on creating inclusive and accessible opportunities for all community members.

Utilising grant funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund to look at Active Recreation outcomes, Council engaged Ross Planning to develop a strategy that will serve as a blueprint for programming, priorities, and activation of both existing and planned open spaces.

Since March 2023, Council Officers and Ross Planning have actively sought input from the community through a variety of channels, including surveys, drop-in sessions, and stakeholder interviews. This inclusive approach ensures that the strategy aligns with the diverse needs and preferences of Wangaratta residents.

“We know the impact of well-planned and managed community spaces,” said Deputy Mayor Harvey Benton. “In our rural communities a reserve can be the heart of the community, and in Wangaratta they provide somewhere to gather, to play, and to build connections.”

On Tuesday evening, at the December Ordinary Council Meeting, Councillors voted to endorse the Recreation and Open Space Strategy. The draft strategy is now on public exhibition.

“This strategy considers the work we’ve done on Masterplans, and all the projects we have underway to plan for our growing community,” Cr. Benton said. “It’s important the community take this opportunity to have their say and tell us if we have it right.”

The full strategy, along with an executive summary, can be viewed on Connect Wangaratta Recreation & Open Space Strategy | Connect Wangaratta. Community drop-in sessions will be held in early February. Feedback is welcome until 15 February 2024.
