Nominations for the prestigious Australia Day Awards 2024 are closing soon. The Rural City of Wangaratta invites the public to take a moment and acknowledge the individuals and groups who have made a positive difference in our vibrant community this year.
This annual event is a celebration of local heroes whose dedication and contributions often go unnoticed. The Rural City of Wangaratta acknowledges the importance of these unsung heroes who play a significant role in making our community a better place.
Nominations are now open for awards in the following categories:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year (under 25)
- Community Event or Project of the Year
Recipients will be presented with their awards at the 2024 Australia Day celebrations held across the municipality.
“There are so many people and organisations in our community that go above and beyond to make the Rural City of Wangaratta special. This is your chance to thank them and acknowledge their inspirational work,” said Mayor Dean Rees
“If you know an outstanding volunteer, community group, teacher, shop assistant, builder, doctor, or anyone who inspires you, I urge you to take a minute to nominate them for the 2024 Australia Day Awards.” he continued.
In addition to receiving an award on Australia Day, the Citizen of the Year is invited to be part of the Marmungun Rock Ceremony during Reconciliation Week in 2024.
“This is a very unique and special opportunity for the Citizen of the Year and Council is extremely honored to be part of the event.” said Mayor Rees.
Neil Jarrott was awarded the Citizen of the Year 2023 for his dedication to the community of Moyhu as well as his community work through Moyhu Action Group, Moyhu Lions Club and the King Valley Learning Exchange.
"It's a really humbling experience and one that I'll think about for the rest of my life," said Neil Jarrot at the time of his Marmungun Rock Ceremony presentation.

A hard copy nomination form can also be obtained from Customer Service at Wangaratta Government Centre, Wangaratta Library, or the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre.
Nominations close 4pm, Friday 3 November 2023.
