Back to School Traffic Safety

As schools begin term one the Rural City of Wangaratta would like to remind motorists that school speed zone limits are now in effect. These reduced speed limits are crucial in ensuring the safety of our children as they travel to and from school. They also safeguard the School Crossing Supervisors that manage our crossings.

Council received reports of drivers putting Crossing Supervisors at risk towards the end of last year. Crossing supervisors do an incredible job keeping our children safe and prompting drivers to pay attention when driving within these zones.

Studies have shown that a reduction in speed can significantly increase the chances of a child surviving if hit by a car. Therefore, speed limits in school zones are lowered to 40 km/h during peak times when students are commuting. We urge all drivers to slow down and remain vigilant for children crossing the road or near school buses. Failure to adhere to the school zone speed limit may result in fines.

Council also reminds motorists to adhere to parking regulations and no-standing zones around school crossings. These restrictions are essential for maintaining clear visibility and reducing congestion. Blocking these areas, even momentarily, can create hazards by obstructing sightlines and increasing the risk of accidents.

Slowing down in school zones is paramount, we're not just obeying the law, we're actively protecting the lives of our community's children." Said Irene Grant, Mayor of the Rural City of Wangaratta.

Council is also running a social media campaign promoting school, crossing safety, and featuring our school crossing supervisors.
