The Rural City of Wangaratta has been granted $5.46million from the State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, allowing the Wangaratta Sports Aquatic Centre to receive major upgrades to its basketball facilities and courts.

Southern-cross Developers Pty Ltd were awarded the contract at the June council meeting for the Wangaratta Sports & Aquatic Centre Expansion.

Project Includes:

  • Redevelop and expand the Indoor Stadium to include two new courts.
  • Upgrade the Show Court to competition level and provide additional seating for a total capacity of 900 people.
  • Two additional multi-purpose courts (Netball, Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball and Pickleball).
  • A new gymnasium including a functional fitness training studio.

Project Timeframe:

Works commenced on 8 June 2022, with building works completed in May 2024.

  • 31 October 2024 Update
The required Occupancy Permit has been delayed due to the ongoing process of confirming that all fire safety requirements have been met, this matter is only for the new works, with no impact to the existing WSAC facility. This process is outside the control of the WSAC team and is necessary to ensure the building's safety and compliance.

Council continues to work closely with fire safety experts to ensure the facility meet safety standards. Progress has been made towards completing this, but the time it will take remains unclear. Further updates will be provided when more information is available.

We understand the facility's importance to sporting group’s activities and regret any inconvenience this delay may cause. We’ll continue to work with stakeholders to complete this process as soon as possible and ensure a successful public opening.
