Wangaratta CBD Parking Meter Update
Providing suitable public parking plays a vital role in creating an appealing central business district, benefiting both visitors and businesses alike. A ‘user pays’ system, utilising parking machines, has been in place in the Wangaratta CBD for many years.
The current payment system includes 72 machines that only take cash with the option of using the EasyPark App as an alternative payment method. There are also locations within and near the CBD where parking remains free.
The current machines, installed in 2015, have reached the end of their functional life. A review has been completed to prepare for replacement of these machines with a modernised car-parking payment system. It included consideration of the types and number of machines, locations, financial implications and alternative payment methods.
A replacement parking payment system is on the agenda for the 25 February, with the following options being presented to Council:
- Reduce the number of machines to 16 to cover the more central parts of the CBD. To be used in combination with EasyPark which will apply to all areas of the CBD where the current payment system applies.
- Reduce the number of machines to 50 to cover the more central parts of the CBD to be used in combination with EasyPark which will apply to all areas of the CBD where the current payment system applies.
- Change to only using EasyPark in all areas of the CBD where the current payment system applies. No machines required.
- Free parking - no payment system for Council parking across the entire CBD.
Options 1-3 will maintain the ‘user pays’ system in the area where the current payment system applies only.
