Seeking submissions on Dan Morgan's grave

Seeking submissions on Dan Morgan's grave Posted: 26-09-2017

Should a plaque referring to bushranger Dan Morgan as ‘Mad Dog Morgan’ be removed or changed?

That’s the question the Wangaratta Cemetery Trust is asking the public as it seeks submissions on the accuracy and appropriateness of the plaque that has sat on the grave since the 1980s.

It follows correspondence from a member of the public questioning the plaque.

Chair of the Wangaratta Cemetery Trust, Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Ken Clarke OAM, said the Trust had received advice from the Department of Health and Human Services to assist in resolving the matter.

“Based on that advice, we’re calling for submissions regarding the plaque and the information displayed on it,” he said.

“All members of the public are invited to have their say.”

As well as describing the bushranger as ‘Mad Dog Morgan’, the plaque also gives a short summary of his life, leading up to his death at Peechelba Station in 1865.

Submissions should be made in writing to the Wangaratta Cemetery Trust, PO Box 238, Wangaratta 3676 or email to council@wangaratta.vic.gov.au until close of business Friday 27 October 2017.
