Town Planning
Town Planning is about the use, development and protection of land. Urban and rural planning is vital for the orderly expansion of new housing and industry into areas best suited for them. Productive agricultural land needs to be protected, as does the quality of the natural and urban environment. The Wangaratta Planning Scheme is developed to control the use and development of land to achieve the orderly and proper planning of the Rural City of Wangaratta.
Building
This service is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Building Act 1993 and the Building Regulations 1994. In the interest of public health and safety (and to maintain the integrity of private and individual investments), a building permit may be required before construction commences.
A building permit is generally required for any additions to an existing dwelling including garages, construction of some fences, restumping of an existing building, construction of a shed or ingound swimming pool.
