The Rural City of Wangaratta, whilst living up to its vision of being "the Ultimate in Liveability", is also subject to the uncertainties of the elements like everywhere else.
The impacts of fire, flood, drought, storm and heatwaves, along with major accidents, have historically shaped the district environment and have necessitated community reaction.
In particular, Wangaratta, being located at the confluence of two major rivers, periodically experiences flooding of various magnitudes with the floods of 1974 and 1993 having a devastating effect on the community.
Fires have also been prominent in Wangaratta’s History. The 2006/07 Alpine fires in the Upper King Valley impacted on the communities of Cheshunt, Edi, Myhree, Rose River, Tolmie, Whitfield and surrounding areas whilst the 2009 Black Saturday fires impacted on the Murmungee community.
