Rural City of Wangaratta
About Our Region

Discover - Adventure, Legends & Indulgence

Located in North East Victoria, the Rural City of Wangaratta encompasses the Alpine Valleys of the King and lower Ovens Rivers.

With a total population of approximately 28,000 residents, and with continuing growth in industrial, retail and tourism sectors, the Rural City of Wangaratta is one of Victoria’s most progressive provincial centres.

Comprising 18,000 residents,  Wangaratta is the Rural City’s largest urban centre.  Prominent townships and villages include Everton, Glenrowan, Oxley, Milawa, Moyhu, Peechelba, Springhurst, Whitfield, Whorouly and Eldorado.

Wangaratta is a leading regional centre providing a range of services for all age groups.  The Rural City provides strong recreational, commercial, educational, tourism and health facilities, including regional private and public hospitals.  It has diverse industry and economic stability and is the regional headquarters for several state government agencies.

Families are well served by twenty one primary schools, three secondary schools, a specialist school, a TAFE Institute, many childcare and kindergarten facilities and a centre for continuing education.  With the establishment of Victoria’s first Technical Education Centre and Year 9 Community College we can also look forward to strengthened links between education and industry.

The Rural City of Wangaratta’s location in beautiful North East Victoria allows residents and visitors to enjoy the best nature has to offer. Cycling, bushwalking and fishing are some of the favourite leisure activities where people can reap the benefits of a perfect location.  Akin to the natural beauty is the superb array of gourmet food and fine wines available in an ever changing seasonal environment.

The Rural City of Wangaratta is proud of its heritage.  Australia’s most well known bushranger, Ned Kelly, is captured and preserved in and around the historic township of Glenrowan which has seen the “Siege Site” placed on the National Heritage List.

Wangaratta is officially titled “Australia’s Capital of Jazz”, due to the incredibly successful Wangaratta Festival of Jazz., held annually in November. One of many special events hosted within the Rural City, this festival has been acknowledged as a Tourism Victoria Hallmark Event and Tourism Australia’s “Most Significant Regional Festival”.
